Comment exprimer la condition et une hypothèse ?
If... (= si ...) : la concordance des temps est obligatoire avec "if".
...
CONDITION / HYPOTHESIS / condition et hypothèse
1) IF + PRESENT -> FUTUR = WILL + VB
- If I offer a book to my sister, I will buy a .... because she loves this.
= si j'offre un livre à ma soeur, j'achèterai un ...
- If you come / pop in tomorrow, I will prepare you a cuppa !
= si tu viens / passes demain chez moi, je te préparerai une tasse de thé !
- If you want, I will call you once you arrive at home.
= si tu veux, je t'appellerai une fois rentré chez toi.

2) IF + PRETERIT -> CONDITIONNEL PRESENT = WOULD + VB
- If the French were like the English, they would offer presents in a Christmas stocking.
= si les français ressemblaient aux anglais, ils offriraient des cadeaux dans une chaussette pour Noël.
- If I bought a book for Christmas, I would take a detective novel.
= si j'achetais un livre pour Noël, je prendrais un roman policier.
- If there was (were) no pandemic, I would go on a gap year in Canada right away !
= s'il n'y avait pas de pandémie, je partirais tout de suite au Canada !
- If I went on holiday now, I would go to Scotland.
= si j'allais en vacances, j'irais en Ecosse.

3) IF + PLUPERFECT -> CONDITIONNEL PASSE = WOULD HAVE + PART. PASSE
- If I had been able to travel all round the world, I would have chosen Asia, then New-Zealand.
= si j'avais pu voyager partout dans le monde, j'aurais choisi l'Australie, puis la Nouvelle-Zélande.
- If I had thought earlier, I would have taken the train instead of the plane.
= si j'avais pensé plus tôt, j'aurais pris le train à la place de l'avion.
- If we had met before, we could have shared the same flat and become friends !
= si nous nous étions rencontrés plus tôt, nous aurions pu partager le même appartement et devenir amis!
- If I had been able to afford studies and accommodation, I would have studied in a dynamic city and then I would have spent a gap year abroad to improve my English !
how great it would have been !
= si j'avais pu me permettre des études et un logement, j'aurais étudié dans une ville dynamique, puis j'aurais passé une année sabbatique à l'étranger pour améliorer mon anglais !
comme cela aurait été génial !
